Source Of College Grants For Distance Learning Degree Programs Often State Government

College students are discovering that paying for college isn’t always easy. Not only do they have to cover the cost of tuition and various fees, but books and other supplies are getting more expensive with each passing year. Some textbooks cost in the hundreds of dollars and when you have to buy several books each semester that can really add up.

Students who have planned ahead and saved some money for tuition may find themselves in a better position than those students who don’t, but that doesn’t mean everything will be covered. When you take into account additional expenses like food, clothing, and housing, it’s not very likely that your savings will be enough to cover everything. Students shouldn’t get discouraged, though, because there is financial assistance available that won’t cost them a cent.

There are many opportunities for students to receive money from a wide variety of grants. Grants are an ideal financial tool for students, because the money is given to the students for tuition and expenses, and it doesn’t ever need to be paid back. Annually, there are billions of dollars in grant money awarded to students to help them pay for their education and ancillary expenses.

When looking at grants, it’s important to understand that there are several different categories of grants, and the different grants are based on different types of need or qualification. The two basic qualifiers for most grant programs are need and merit. A need-based grant is awarded because a student has demonstrated a higher financial need for help than other applicants. A merit grant is awarded based on a student’s particular ability or skill set that might include academic ability, a talent or skill, or service.

The first and most common category of educational grant is a federal grant. That means the money comes from the federal government and is available to students nationwide. The most common kind of federal grant is the Pell Grant, which is a need-based grant. The Pell Grant can supply the neediest of students a stipend of up to $5,550 each year. There are other federal grants available, such as the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, which is available to the neediest of Pell Grant recipients and is intended to supplement the Pell Grant. Additionally, the Federal government also awards the SMART (Science and Math Access to Retain Talent) Grant, as well as the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

Another very good source of grant money is through the state you reside in. Many local governments also have grant money available to their residents. The types of grants vary from state to state; some are based on GPA, while others are based on class ranking. Check with your state’s Department of Education or the city council for more information on state and local grants.

There are also thousands of privately funded grants from institutions and private groups. These grants are usually either student-specific or profession-specific grants. That means they are affiliated with either a certain career track, or the student is a member of a certain category or group of people. Students can get information on profession-specific grants through the department of their major or through the trade or professional association that has a relationship or affiliation with their chosen major. For student-specific grants, such as minority status grants or grants based on a disability, check with your financial aid office.

There’s no need to be tens of thousands of dollars in debt if you are eligible for student grants. Too many students let grant opportunities pass them by because they don’t know about them and they simply don’t apply for them. You may have a chance to engage in online distance learning programs for free through college grants and scholarships; if you don’t apply, you’ll never know the possibilities.
